Historic home perched five storeys above solid ground so 50-storey condo can rise behind 19th century dwelling

There is little chance the original occupants of John Irwin House could have imagined what would happen to their dwelling 141 years hence, in particular that it would be perched in mid air, five storeys above solid ground for weeks on end.

And yet that is where the heritage brick house at 21 Grenville Street is now, held up by a thin concrete slab and two pillars that rise up from the slowly developing base of a 50-storey condominium project.

“We’ve had a number of cases over the years where there’s been some pretty nifty ways of keeping buildings up, but they’re generally not hanging over the site in full form,” said Mary MacDonald, manager of Heritage Preservation Services. “It’s pretty dramatic.”
