Hi all,
We are hearing that the Flamingo Block (229 11 Avenue SE) may face demolition. Tenants have been asked to leave and no new leases are being signed. While it is "only" a class B building our feelings are that we would like to see it remain. Just a heads up, we lost the Curtis Block a couple of years ago and that was questionable, especially since no new development occurred. We would like to avoid the same mistake with the Flamingo building.
Vic Park.

The "Flamingo Block" is the original Calgary Labour Temple, and important location in Calgary's labour history. It is on the City's inventory as a Community Historic Resource (the old A,B,C designations, referred to in the above post, have been retired).

Here is information from the City website:
http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/LUPP/Pages/Heritage-planning/Historic-resources/Discover-Historic-Calgary-Content.aspx?dhcResourceId=1923

Here is information from the Beltline Communities:

Coincidentally, this year the Alberta labour movement is celebrating their 100th anniversary:

Hello,
is it true that they are building another one about a mile away? I think that's what I heard on the radio, but my English is not that strong so I am not sure if I really heard it right, the guy is an attorney so I tend to trust him.

This image of the as-yet undeveloped NE corner of the "Keynote" development, at 11th Avenue and Macleod Trail SE, seems to show that at least the facade of the former Calgary Labour Temple (midway down the block on the right side of image) may be preserved.

This page from the Beltline community shows what the building looks like now, before renovation, and originally. Quite a few changes.

Here is the entry on the City heritage inventory:

Can't vouch for the currency of this image, originally posted by Bokimon at www.skyscraperpage.org Project by Balboa, architects Gibbs Gage
