Being Good Sports: Fish and Game
Conservation in Alberta, 1907-1930

Speaker: George Colpitts

Early settlers in the western territories were
witnesses to a rapid decline in what had been viewed
as “superabundant” fish and game populations. This
talk examines the proliferation of town and city
protective associations in Alberta’s early history and
highlights some of the ways pioneers mobilized
against fish hogs, poachers, and tributary trespassers
to safeguard the natural wealth, and reputation, of the
Last Best West.
