Does anyone else know of a business still existing in Calgary from 100 years ago?

Toole Peet Real Estate and Insurance Brokers, founded 1897. The history on their website notes that " Toole, Peet & Co. was one of the few firms that managed to survive the boom and collapse of the real estate market." http://www.toolepeet.com/

Burnco Rock Products, founded 1912 - cement, landscaping materials etc. http://www.burnco.com/

Burnco's centennial marks growth from one man into Canadian giant

In 1912, James Francis Burns left his home in Ontario to seek his fortune in the Canadian West. After initially homesteading in the Stettler area, Burns quickly recognized the potential that existed in the ever-growing boom town of Calgary. When he moved there, he had only $1.50 to his name, but it didn't take him long to start his own concrete and excavation company using a team of horses, a dump wagon and a set of hand shovels. Today, the company Burns started is known as Burnco Rock Products Ltd. and is the largest independent concrete company in Canada. Scott Burns, current CEO and greatgrandson of the company's founder, couldn't help but reflect on history this week as the company formally observed its 100th anniversary...

Some more "century businesses" information courtesy of the Calgary Public Library, Central Branch, Community Heritage and Family History Department:

This pamphlet it is a really good source for businesses 100 years ago because it was published in 1911 (These would, of course, be businesses that were already established by 1912):

Certainly there are some that have name changes e.g. Calgary Power is now Enmax. http://www.enmax.com/Corporation/About+ ... istory.htm

Pat Burns now part of Maple Leaf Foods

Northern Assurance Company Ltd. (now AVIVA)

Of the ones that jump out:

McAra Printing: http://www.mcara.com/100
Massey Harris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massey_Ferguson

Other business include, of course, The Herald, The Sun (Albertan), Hudson's Bay Co., Canadian Pacific, the Banks and Riley and McCormick http://www.realcowboys.com/store/index. ... =page&id=1

Are Rona and the original Revelstoke Lumber connected? Rona took over Revelstoke in 2001.

Also, here is a link to the Henderson's directories for 1912 and 1913:

Here is another century business, Fraser Milner Casgrain law's Calgary office dates back to 1912 (predecessor practice eventually absorbed into FMC)

Another 100 year old business

I was researching in Henderson's 1912 directory and found our corner store listed for the first time in 1912. "Alberta Grocery 19 Ave E nw corner 9th Street " There is still a store operating there today called Alberta Corner Store and they still sell groceries.

The area is SE, back in 1912 they only listed the SE and SW as E or W the south was implied. The NW and NE were the only areas that had 2 letters. Sorry I spent so much time in Hendersons lately I dropped using the S. Henderson's never did list the S even in the 50's

Law firm celebrates 100 years in Calgary with derby chuckwagon
Amanda Stephenson, Calgary Herald
Published: Thursday, July 05, 2012

Anyone who thinks chuckwagons and lawyers don't mix doesn't know Calgary, or the philosophy at downtown law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. The firm, which specializes in business law and litigation, is sponsoring a chuckwagon for the first time in this year's Rangeland Derby in celebration of the 100th anniversary of its Calgary office. Just like the Stampede itself, the firm is celebrating its frontier roots and a century of community involvement.

CJ Campbell Insurance

C J Campbell marks 100 years of coverage
David Parker, For the Calgary Herald
Published: Thursday, August 16, 2012

We enjoyed a huge celebration to recognize the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede; in a city this young, it was a great excuse for a party. But there are businesses that have been around that long as well, and C J Campbell Insurance can proudly claim 1912 as the year in which founder C J began his insurance career in Calgary...
