South East LRT LINE

Postby Chris E » Sun Apr 30, 2006 12:03 pm

Several reports have recently been posted to the Calgary Transit website, specifiying specific
route proposals for the planned South East LRT line, these being the and the
We've begun research into the structures affected by the proposed route, as follows:

SE LRT ROUTE EXCLUDING DOWNTOWN

Image

1020 9th St SE - Built 1956
Image

Typical 50's bungalow
Map appears to show that the LRT would only require shaving a small portion of the back yard off the lot, perhaps the house could remain standing and be resold by the city with a shorter lot.

1020 11th Ave SE - Built 1949
Image

Typical 50's bungalow
Map indicates retaining wall would go right through the house.

1101 10th St SE - Built 1960
Image

Style seems older than 1960, perhaps the City has incorrect records
Map indicates that new bend in road would require demolition.

1105 10th St SE - Built 1942
Image

Style seems older than 40's, perhaps the City has incorrect records
Map indicates that new bend in road would basically bring sidewalk right to the front door of this house, demolition likely.

1108 10th St SE - Built 1923
Image

Building isn't architecturally fabulous, but might be worth checking to see if there is any historical value.
Map indicates that entire property would be gouged away to allow new LRT station to be located in this spot, but down the hill.

1015 11 St SE (Shur-Gain) - Built date unknown
Image
Image

Don't have any info on this building.
Map indicates pedestrian overpass would extend across tracks to this site, simply shifting the overpast just a few degrees West would allow it to enter the site but not affect the building. Site also includes empty (no buildings) south lot of Crown Surplus presently being used to store oversized items outside as shown by blue dashed line on photo.

1127 11 St SE - Built date unknown
Image

No info on building itself.
Map indicates that new retaining wall would go right through building.

???? 11th St SE - Built date unknown
Image

No info on this.
Map indicates the access road would be removed, but building seems like it could remain untouched. Building goes up the hill and has alley access as well.

1141 11th St SE - Built date unknown
Image

Artpoint.
Map indicates just as for the previous property, building could remain but access road is being removed.
On possible solution indicated on the map is the cul-de-sac at the end of 12th avenue would revert back to having access to 11th street, map shows new road cutting across cleared lots and joining with the Artpoint parking lot. Seems that could also be modifed to go behind Artpoint so it could also lend access to building H. Also, if the pedestrian walkways were elevated, it appears there is room for the street in front of Artpoint to not be removed, which would give access to both buildings as well.

1802 11th St SE - Built date unknown
Image

Very dilapitated building, no real value other than excellent photo opportunities for industrial decay sets.

1902 11th St SE - Built 1905

Ramsay Design Centre.
From the map it looks like the main effect on the site is loss of rear parking due to the retaining wall. There is some conflict with a small portion of the south west corner of the building, appears small enough that some sort of compromise could be made with with retaining wall route adjustment or slight modification of the rear of the building.
This building is a category C on the Inventory of Potential Heritage sites maintained by the Calgary Heritage Authority and the City.

2010 St SE - Built date unknown

2010 11th St SE - Built 1911

CC Snowdon Building.
This is an odd building, it appears to be constructed as a large box shaped building in the rear, with 2 small buildings stuck on the front, in the middle and left side (as viewed by photos above). Inspection from the rear shows that all or most of the rear box building has been gutted by fire, but the front two portions seem fine.
Looking at the left photo in the last line of photos, the map shows the retaining wall going through half of the portion that's boarded up in the photo (left part of photo), and also affecting part of the wooden extension on the right side of the photo. Perhaps a comprimise could have part of the rear of the building removed in return for the rest of the building restored.?
This building is a category C on the Inventory of Potential Heritage sites maintained by the Calgary Heritage Authority and the City.

Calgary transit has released an updated document here:

http://www.calgarytransit.com/pdf/South ... endium.pdf

The document indicates the city will require the full lot of (above)

F) Shur-Gain

K) Ramsay Design Centre

M) CC Snowdon building

As well it is indicated that 40% of the Shamrock Hotel property would be needed, in addition to 100% of the Lilydale chicken plant property.

as well as other perhaps less historically interesting sites.

Unsure if this means the definite demolition of these sites, full or partial.

Between Inglewood and the downtown start of the line (2nd st SW at Eau Claire) no other lot acquisitions are indicated.

The proposed Southeast Setway - a dedicated route for BRT along the future SE LRT trackbed - is presently being researched (January 2012). As noted above, the SE routing has implications for a number of heritage properties. The City needs to take a look at the heritage implications and means to mitigate. http://www.calgarytransit.com/html/setway.html
