Heritage Roundtable: Calgary in 1912 – January 25

The Community Heritage Roundtable kicks off the new year with a look back at an old year. 1912 was the peak of Calgary’s first boom, the boom that made Calgary a city. Professor Don Smith, author Brian Brennan and Stampede Archivist Aimee Benoit show us what Calgary was really like in 1912.

January 25. Doors open 6:30, event 7-9 pm.
Memorial Park Library, 2nd Street and 13th Avenue SW.

Free event. Register online at www.calgarycommunities.com/events.php , look for the event in the drop-down menu, or phone 403-244-4111.

The year 1912 was a significant year in the history of this city. The founding of Calgary Public Library and the first Stampede and the opening of the Lougheed Building and the Grand Theatre, and the brief founding of the first "University of Calgary" are just some of the events that happened in that pivotal year. Join us as we take a closer look at just some of the interesting events, people and institutions of that time.

Featuring: Don Smith, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Calgary and founding member of the Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners, will look at the many aspects of Calgary in 1912 at the height of its boom. Local author, former newspaper columnist and wonderful raconteur Brian Brennan will tell us some of the stories he’s uncovered in researching Calgary Public Library’s forthcoming centennial book. Historian and Stampede Archivist Aimee Benoit will highlight some of the fascinating stories of the early days of the Stampede.

Also, hear more about the Calgary 2012 celebration; Calgary has been declared Canada’s Cultural Capital for 2012 on the occasion of the 1912 “centennial”!

As always, there will be time as well for networking and refreshments.

This event is very full. Late arrivals should be prepared to stand or may not be admitted.
