From the ctvcalgary.ca website:
A nun and a nurse are now permanent residents in Calgary's Mission area.
A commemorative statue of a nun wearing a traditional habit and a nurse in a 1950's
graduation uniform was unveiled today in front of the Holy Cross Centre.
In 1891, four Sister of Charity nuns established the Holy Cross Hospital with just $73.75.
The school of nursing was established sixteen years later in 1907.
According to Barbara Nesselback, a graduate of the class of 1960, the statue is a nod to Sister of Charity nuns contribution to Calgary's history.
The bronze statue has been named ‘Nuns and Nightingales'.

Holy Cross Commemorative was established to acknowledge the contribution of the Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) and Graduates of Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing to the history of Calgary.

Four brave Sister of Charity ( Grey Nuns) accepted the challenge to travel west from Montreal to the frontier town of Calgary, Alberta. They arrived on January 30, 1891 with $ 73.75 to establish the Holy Cross Hospital. On April 19, 1892 the first patient was admitted to the two storey 24 foot square building located near St. Mary's Cathedral. Plans were soon underway to build a larger facility on the site west of the Elbow River where it remains a landmark in the Mission area of the City. Over 2400 nurses graduated from the School of Nursing established in 1907, 2010 marked the 100th anniversary of the first class of six.

The Commemorative will be a Bronze sculpture created by Shirley and Don Begg, Studio West, Cochrane depicting a Sister of Charity (Grey Nun) in traditional habit and a nurse in Graduation uniform circa 1950. This Bronze will be called “Nuns and Nightingales” and will be proudly displayed in front of the 1929 wing at the Holy Cross Centre on 2nd street West in the Mission district. This building has been designated a Municipal Historical Resource and will be preserved in its entirety.

The Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns)' legacy is to continue the provision of compassion and charity to all in need throughout Canada. Sr. Rita Coulombe, the last Sister Superior of the hospital established the Youville Recovery Residence for Women in 1977. This not for profit organization continues in Calgary providing support and guidance to women trying to recover from addiction, abuse and mental health

In April 2007 the Alumni of the Holy Cross School of Nursing formed a committee to look into securing a lasting reminder of the contribution the Sisters of Charity made to the history of Calgary and to recognize the 100th anniversary of the School of Nursing.

The “Nuns & Nightingale” Bronze will be unveiled Sunday,September 25, 2011 2-4pm at the Holy Cross Centre (1929 wing) 2210-2nd Street SW in the mission area. We would like to extend an invitation to the public to join us on this special occasion.
