The schedule for Historic Calgary Week (July 22-August 1) has not yet been posted, but here is information on the two tours that CHI is offering. Save the dates! And here is a link to where the full schedule will be posted: http://www.chinookcountry.org/

Mid-Century Modern and More

From brick to brute concrete and curtain walls, the west end of downtown recalls "mid-century" Calgary and our transition from a small prairie city to a modern metropolis built on oil and gas wealth. The post-war Barron Building, the Elveden Centre “superblock”, the concrete waterfall landscape of Century Gardens, the striking Nova (Nexen) building, the landmark “Centennial Planetarium" and the venerable Kerby Centre will be some of the featured stops along the way. Join the Calgary Heritage Initiative and guest speakers as we explore the history and architecture of west downtown.

7 pm, Sunday July 24. Meet in front of 607 8th Avenue SW, across from the Uptown Theatre ( :!: note typo in address in some publications)

West Connaught - Beltline Tour

Sandstone schools, impressive churches, historic commercial areas, a scattering of century-old houses and other landmarks recall the history of this Beltline neighbourhood before it was overtaken by high rises in recent decades. Starting at the restored 1908 Central Collegiate Institute, the new home of the Calgary Board of Education, we’ll wend our way westward to the historic Calgary Lawn Bowling Club, where club members will tell us about its history. Join the Calgary Heritage Initiative and guest speakers for this stroll through west Connaught.

4 pm, Monday July 25. Meet in front of the Carl Safran Centre, 13th Avenue SW between 8th and 9th Streets.

Historic Calgary Week 2011 runs from July 22 to August 1 and is proudly presented by Chinook Country Historical Society, working with many partner organizations. Experience presentations on topics ranging from pioneer settlers to military history to the Calgary Ski Club to the Glenbow town and quarry, and enjoy the historical concerts. There will be walking tours in downtown Calgary, west Connaught, Mount Royal, Chinatown, Heritage Park and more; tours of churches, heritage buildings, museums, archives, cemeteries and communities. Help celebrate the centennials of City Hall, Bowness, the Old Y Centre and Mount Royal University. Enjoy all day family events at Lougheed House and Fort Calgary, and travel to several events outside of Calgary.

Watch for our brochure at libraries and historical sites beginning in mid June, or see it at www.chinookcountry.org. For more information contact Val Jobson at vjobson@telus.net or 403-283-1393.
