Simmons Building - East Village news

Postby newsposter » Sun Apr 15, 2007 7:11 pm

Updated March 2012

-------------------------------------------------

The historic Simmons mattress building along the river in East Village is to be the new HQ of the 'Calgary Municipal Land Corporation', according to David Parker in the April 13 and May 24 2007 Calgary Heralds. Info and photo below.

The city-owned corporation is to be responsible for redevelopment in the East Village / Rivers District. http://www.calgary.ca/therivers.

May 24 2007 excerpt

Next Monday, May 28, Chris Ollenberger takes on the responsibility of directing the planning and construction of The Rivers as the founding president and CEO of the Calgary Municipal Land Corp. He's well aware it is not an easy task but he is confident that the lands which include East Village -- located between two rivers, so close to downtown, in the busiest city in the country -- will begin to be developed in the near future...

(He) expects to move into permanent space in the former Simmons Mattress building along 5th Avenue S.E. by August. Part of the 1,000 square feet of space will be devoted to a display area to keep the public and industry aware of the development's progress.

The Simmons building is up for sale. Will be preserved. Cool building, great location. Here is a link to the info:

In another note, CMLC is moving into the historic Hillier Block on 8th Street, which is being restored... Below is the news story...

Restaurateurs covet East Village site
By Jason Markusoff, Calgary Herald May 13, 2011 East Village's development agency will move out of the Simmons mattress building for new office digs later this year, freeing the 99-year-old riverside building that restaurateurs have coveted well before the for-rent sign goes up today....

The Herald reported in January that "CMLC will this spring announce plans for the historic Simmons Building, which has been around for 100 years. There will be four uses for the building including retail as well as food and beverage."

The CMLC offices will be moving into the Hillier Block, which is looking great with its renovations.

There is an opportunity to visit the Simmons building for an open house on St. Patrick's Island plans on March 28. See the notice in Events.
