Garry Theatre is the new Ironwood in Inglewood

Postby newsposter » Thu Jun 04, 2009 11:32 am

A few years ago one of Calgary's oldest theatres, the Garry Theatre on 9th Avenue in Inglewood, was converted from a theatre to retail space (you may remember it as the home of Loose Moose for many years...). The June 2009 issue of the Inglewood Community Newsletter reports that the nearby Ironwood Stage and Grill is hoping to convert the Garry back into cultural space. Original Ironwood will remain too. Music club gets bigger digs - Historic theatre offers more space for Ironwood.

Calgary Herald, Jan 12, 2010
http://www.calgaryherald.com/entertainm ... story.html

excerpt:

CALGARY - Calgary, get ready to meet the new Ironwood. If all goes according to schedule, Inglewood's Ironwood Stage and Grill -- which has been a staple venue for roots music since 2003 -- will be moving down the block on 9th Avenue S. E, reopening in the historic Garry Theatre by the end of this month... In addition to the larger space, the lure of moving into the landmark Garry Theatre was one that (Ironwood owner Patrick MacIntyre) found enticing...The Garry Theatre, which was built in 1931 as a cinema (sic - according to City inventory, built in 1936), became a popular theatre venue and the hub of Calgary's fringe festival in the 1990s. But in 2003, when the innovative Loose Moose Theatre was unable to pay the rent, the venue became a trendy furniture store -- something that never sat well with the arts community. That's something the owners of the Garry Theatre regretted, MacIntyre says, so they, too, were eager to turn the facility back into an arts-friendly venue...

Also, Ironwood finds new historic home. David Parker, Calgary Herald, Jan 14 2009
