Globe and Mail story June 7 2008 on disappointing changes to the Encana tower...

CALGARY -- A skyscraper that British architect Norman Foster promised would deliver innovation and urban vitality to Calgary's downtown has suffered some serious blows. The cuts to the original design vision - elimination of suspended sky pods and the filling in of a soaring atrium - may satisfy the owner's bottom line, but they will also hurt the city's attempt to ride its economic boom in style....

Informed sources suggest that the south building of the Encana project may not be completed. This is bad news for preservationists as that area includes the historic Regis Hotel and the deconstructed York Hotel, which is supposed to be installed as the facade of the south building:

H&R REIT may sell assets, not finish south block of The Bow
March 04, 2009, 8:35 PM by Jonathan Ratner

RBC Capital Markets analyst Neil Downey mused in a note to clients that H&R Real Estate Investment Trust may cap the south block of EnCana Corp.’s new headquarters known as The Bow...

Bad news confirmed. The south building, including cultural space and re-constructed York facade is on hold for now - "deferred". According to the Mayor in a Herald report, the builder is obligated to construct the south block within one year of occupancy of the north block tower.

As the Bow tops the old Petro Canada building, don't forget about the York Hotel facade waiting to be restored to the deferred south building.

Bow takes Calgary skyline to new heights
By Dan Healing, Calgary Herald July 9, 2010

[i]... Bow will be the home of energy companies Encana and Cenovus when completed in early 2012. It will have nearly two million square feet of leasable space and will be the tallest office building in the country outside of Toronto... the fate of the deferred 10-storey south block has not been determined and won't be until the current main building is finished...[i]

Hello B&I, there was an article in the Herald the other week that referred to the "south tower"/York hotel.

The Bow isn't big enough for a growing Encana
Growth to Telus building as well
By Mario Toneguzzi, Calgary Herald December 17, 2010

Excerpt (link to full story at the bottom):

...The planned south block of the Bow project, which was to house office, retail and cultural space in about 200,000 square feet, was deferred due to the challenging economic times.

The south block would be a seven-storey complex to be built where the historic York Hotel formerly stood, using bricks taken from the demolished hotel.

"The current development plan with the City of Calgary calls for the start of construction of the south block at the time of occupancy of the north tower. Our plan is to meet those obligations. If this changes we will let Calgarians know," said Michael Brown, associate vice-president of Matthews Southwest, the developer of the Bow project.

Reardon said any proposals for the south block of the Bow project will rest with the owner and the developer.

"There really isn't anything developing on the south block at the moment that's sort of far enough along that we can even speculate as to what will eventually be there," he said.

Greg Kwong, regional managing director for Alberta for CB Richard Ellis Ltd., said he expects construction within the next couple of years to begin on the south block project.

"It's not the office space that's the lead (tenant) in this case. It's that cultural that they need to secure," he said.

The second "Bow" building, including a restored York Hotel facade, is back on track after earlier being delayed. We assume the facade is part of this application but await confirmation...

Disappointing news. The south building of the Bow has been delayed indefinitely, which means the agreed upon restoration of the York Hotel façade is also delayed. A temporary plaza is to be installed on the site of the unbuilt south building. The restoration of the York was part of the developer obligation that enabled the building of the Bow and its massive parkade, which extends under 6th Avenue and the south building site.
