The proposal for redevelopment of Eau Claire market goes to CPC on August 9, 2007. The present Eau Claire market, dating to the mid-80s will be demolished and replaced. The historic smokestack will be a major entry feature with a plaza and historic interpretation.

The 1886 cafe is not part of this application (it's on public land immediately to the west of the application), but the plan is to retain it and perhaps relocate it closer to the river.

Proposed amendments to the Eau Claire ARP to accommodate a redeveloped market area/public space also recommend designating the 1886 Cafe and the smokestack as municipal heritage resources. The 1886 Cafe may also be moved from its current location (which is not its original location) to somewhere else in the area when redevelopment occurs (some proposals have suggested putting it closer to the river). The cafe was an office of the Eau Claire lumber company, and the smokestack was part of the heating system for the old bus barns.

Eau Claire smokestack designation going to Council's Land Use and Transportation Committee on June 18 2008:

The Eau Claire Smokestack, dating from 1947, is a 27.4-metre (90-foot) high, red-brick chimney structure located in downtown Calgary. The stand-alone structure is occupies the south-west corner of its lot and is situated at the intersection of Second Avenue and Barclay Parade SW.

The brick smokestack in the Eau Claire Market plaza is a remnant of the Calgary Transit System Garage which stood on the site from 1947 until 1988. It is the sole tangible link to that era of Eau Claire’s development history. Together with The Eau Claire and Bow River Lumber Company office, built in 1911, the smokestack recalls the successive industrial uses of the area before its development as a shopping and entertainment district in the 1990s.

After designation as a Municipal Heritage Resource in 2008, the Eau Claire Smokestack is under threat due to a proposed redevelopment. For more info check out the link to CBC:
