A building that has been in the community of Erlton for nearly a century has been demolished to make way for upgrades to the intersection it is located at.

City crews spent most of the day Sunday tearing down the building which is located at Macleod Trail and 25th Avenue SE.

The 96-year-old building was home to the Shamrock Grocery from 1941 to 1949.

The store made history in 1943 when William Reader, Calgary's Parks Superintendent who created the Reader Rock Garden, suffered a fatal heart attack in the store.
