One Palliser Square re-cladding

Postby newsposter » Mon Jun 04, 2007 5:50 pm

One of Calgary's best 'early' skyscrapers, the 1970 "One Palliser Square", east of the Calgary tower, may have its distintive, sculpted concrete exterior covered by a new glass skin as part of the redevelopment of Palliser Square.

As the new Palliser South office building opens, there is another reminder (see above for previous mentions and a model of recent plans) of the unfortunate plan to eventually re-clad One Palliser Square, the 1970 late-modern office building immediately north of the new building. Also plans for new office building flanking the Calgary Tower, further crowding this landmark. As the March 17, 2010 Herald notes: Also in the works are proposed office towers on each side of the Calgary Tower. A development permit is in place for that project. Hutcheson said that, in time, the whole block would look similar in its architecture to the new Palliser South tower. One Palliser Square will eventually get a facelift as part of the overall plan.

With so many empty lots in Calgary, it is a shame that the Tower precinct is going to be crowded with new buildings, and that interesting ones like One Palliser Square, with its unusual sculptured concrete facade, will be hidden behind anonymous glass.
