Re: "Elementary students protest against plan to relocate classes," Feb. 8.
It was inspirational to see children protesting over the possible closure of a school they love. I felt like joining them. Fifty years ago, I went to St. John's and now my grand-daughter attends this small close-knit school.
Kensington is a perfect fit for the fine arts school. It is in an eclectic older area. It's sad; however, I am sure St. John's will be another older building in Calgary that will be gone to make way for progress.

I am the mother of two girls who attended St. John Fine Arts School in the 1990s. We lived in the relatively far south community of Sundance; however, for more than five years, my girls took the bus twice a day to the school. Both my girls, now in their 20s, have told me that the years they spent at St. John were the best of their schooling. It was a very special school then, and I would hope it has continued to be.
Fifteen years ago, it could be an hour to an hour-and-a-half bus ride twice a day (not ideal, but my girls loved this school so much, they were willing to take it) and, while I certainly sympathize with the north parents, decentralizing the school's location essentially prohibits south students from attending. What would be ideal is if there could be a south location and a north location. I am certain if the word were spread about what a wonderful program this school has to offer, there would be more than enough students wanting to attend.

I am a Grade 4 student of St. John Fine Arts School. I would hate to see it close. It's been around for almost 100 years. My grandma went to St. John and she would hate to see her old school close down.
I love St. John because it is a small school.
I like having a small school because you have a good idea who everyone is. I think it's cool how it's been around so long. I also love my teachers and I hope they don't change. And I don't mind how long the bus ride is.

Additional information added Dec. 2011: Just to add a bit... under the "Joint Use Agreement", the City has first right of refusal to purchase the land, normally to fill local open space needs, which may be an issue here as it is in most inner city communities. In any case, stay tuned. But it may be awhile before any final decisions are made...
