St. John's School news

Updated April 2013 - see bottom of thread
--------------------------------------------------------------

An article in Metro, October 24 2011 by Janice Paskey, makes this passing mention: A school is the heart of a community, and school closures stop the pulse. Consider the lovely historic St. John’s Fine Arts School is said to be sold for condos. School closures seem to be the result of trying to finance too many schools... Full story: http://www.metronews.ca/calgary/comment ... ood-lesson

Does anyone have further information? More than a rumour? St. John's elementary was built in 1916 and is considered a City Wide Historic Resource. I believe it and the 1919 Holy Angels School in Cliff Bungalow are the last of the "old" Catholic schools.

We have heard that the Catholic school board is denying that any sale plans are in place for St. John's school. They are engaged in a broad planning process and consultation around programming and student accommodation which includes this and other schools. Consideration of school closures would typically be part of this kind of exercise, so keep your powder dry. There are consultation meetings happening in November and December. Information shared at public meetings with parents and posted on the CSSD website indicates that the Catholic administration proposes to move the fine arts program out of St. John's school and close that school. There is no proposal to move other programs into St. John's:

Proposal for Discussion: Review closure of St. John School and relocation of Fine Arts program to a future NW K-9 setting – options for consideration include St. Maria Goretti, Mother Mary Greene, St. Dominic and others. More information at this link: http://www.cssd.ab.ca/files/programs/qu ... ov9-11.pdf

The sale of the site for development is a likely option if the school loses its programs. Re-use as a charter school is another option, but probably less attractive to the board - we believe this is one of the few school sites that the board owns (vs. being on "municipal reserve"), and is zoned for development. Conservation of the historic building facing Kensington Road is a key heritage consideration.

 Additional information added Dec. 2011: Just to add a bit... under the "Joint Use Agreement", the City has first right of refusal to purchase the land, normally to fill local open space needs, which may be an issue here as it is in most inner city communities. In any case, stay tuned. But it may be awhile before any final decisions are made...

Going, going, gone

Re: "Elementary students protest against plan to relocate classes," Feb. 8.
It was inspirational to see children protesting over the possible closure of a school they love. I felt like joining them. Fifty years ago, I went to St. John's and now my grand-daughter attends this small close-knit school.
Kensington is a perfect fit for the fine arts school. It is in an eclectic older area. It's sad; however, I am sure St. John's will be another older building in Calgary that will be gone to make way for progress.

Re: "Elementary students protest against plan to relocate classes," Feb. 8.

I am the mother of two girls who attended St. John Fine Arts School in the 1990s. We lived in the relatively far south community of Sundance; however, for more than five years, my girls took the bus twice a day to the school. Both my girls, now in their 20s, have told me that the years they spent at St. John were the best of their schooling. It was a very special school then, and I would hope it has continued to be.

Fifteen years ago, it could be an hour to an hour-and-a-half bus ride twice a day (not ideal, but my girls loved this school so much, they were willing to take it) and, while I certainly sympathize with the north parents, decentralizing the school's location essentially prohibits south students from attending. What would be ideal is if there could be a south location and a north location. I am certain if the word were spread about what a wonderful program this school has to offer, there would be more than enough students wanting to attend.

Chelsey says 'save my school'

Re: "Elementary students protest against plan to relocate classes," Feb. 8.

I am a Grade 4 student of St. John Fine Arts School. I would hate to see it close. It's been around for almost 100 years. My grandma went to St. John and she would hate to see her old school close down.

I love St. John because it is a small school.

I like having a small school because you have a good idea who everyone is. I think it's cool how it's been around so long. I also love my teachers and I hope they don't change. And I don't mind how long the bus ride is.

The Catholic board has voted to close historic St. John school and move the arts program to Dalhousie....

Catholic board votes to shutter schools and close programs
By Richard Cuthbertson, Calgary HeraldMarch 15, 2012

... The potential closure of St. John has split some parents. Few students live within walking distance, with most of the school body living deeper in the northwest. Moving the arts program to Dalhousie will help curtail bus transportation times for many students. There was also a view that if the program is to expand, it will need more space beyond the 200-student capacity at St. John. But some have lamented the pending closure of the brick schoolhouse in Kensington. A handful of students recently held a lunchtime protest in front of the school.

Even some on the Catholic board who voted in favour of closing St. John said they were sorry to see an end of student life at the 1916 building. “It’s with a bit of heartbreak that I see it being a victim of demographics, because that’s the fight of what is now referred to as inner-core schools,” trustee Lois Burke-Gaffney said.

It’s not yet decided what will happen to the building when St. John closes...
