Join the Calgary Public Library in celebrating the inaugural One Book One Calgary selection, Aritha Van Herk’s Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta. As part of this celebration, Calgary Public Library’s Central Library is hosting a Heritage Weekend, November 5-7 with a wide array of passionate and knowledgeable local historians, authors, artists and educators in the John Dutton Theatre.

Friday night kicks off with Stephane Guevremont from the University of Calgary with his wonderful visual presentation, Calgary’s Forgotten Heroes, on the history of Calgary’s 403 fighter squadron from World War II and its ongoing legacy.

Saturday begins in the Local History Room with Maverick Hunters, for those looking to trace their own elusive maverick ancestor with library resources.

Another program for aviation buffs, From Triumph to Tragedy, F is for Freddie recounts the electrifying story of the Mosquito bomber that flew more missions than any other in WW2 with Richard De Boer.

The afternoon starts off with our One Book One Calgary author Aritha Van Herk and historians Harry Sanders and Professor Don Smith as they capture the life and times of this maverick city and its people with An Afternoon with Aritha van Herk and Friends . Enjoy a century of photographs and get an insightful look at the boom and bust life of one of Calgary’s earliest millionaires. Top this off with a visit with one of the Famous Five, Henrietta Muir Edwards.

The Calgary Stampede is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2012, along with Calgary Public Library. Enjoy hearing some of the fascinating stories of Stampede mavericks over the years with Tracey Read in One Hundred Years of the Calgary Stampede

A highlight of the weekend for music buffs is Cow Town/Punk Town: Calgary’s Punk Rock History. Did you know Calgary was a hotbed of a punk revolution? Relive it with author Lori Hahnel who was a member of the all women’s group “The Virgins” and musician Dan Hayes of the seminal band, “The Golden Calgarians”

Sunday’s programs starts with noted local historian John Gilpin presenting a startling and perhaps controversial view of Calgary’s early development with City of Destiny: A Revisionist History of Early Calgary.

What would the weekend be without dinosaurs? Find out about Early Dinosaur Hunters with Dr. David Eberth from the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Then for a break, come and view a few of our vintage films from the Library’s Community Heritage and Family History Collection.

Next, Michale Lang from the Whyte Museum presents Women Mavericks of the Rocky Mountains, a fascinating look at the daring women who explored the Rockies.

The weekend winds up with Religious Mavericks, an informative panel discussion on those who have contributed to our cultural and religious mosaic to leave you thinking .
