Free walking tours kick off

Calgary Herald, Neighbours May 20, 2010

Ten years ago retirees from Transalta Utilities developed a number of projects that provided a means of giving back to the community. Hugh Main's idea of a Historical Walking Tour became one of a dozen such projects.

Stephen Avenue is the most intact historical street west of Montreal. It is richly lined with sandstone and Manitoba limestone buildings decorated with symbols from Canada's founding peoples.

Many locals, walking the Mall, have failed to notice many of these features and are so surprised to learn about these facets they have so often just walked on by.

With such landmarks, participants receive the story of Calgary's growth from pioneer days to more current accomplishments around innovations in energy technology.

These free walking tours begin at the Glenbow Museum doors near our sandwich board, every Thursday at 10:00 a.m., May through September.

The first tour is always with the city's ambassadors who in Calgary's red shirts and white cowboy hats, assist tourists with directions, queries and information.

Visitors from so many countries visit our fair city.

As well, newcomers, special interest groups, seniors groups and locals come for a walk and some talk.

We are listed in the tourist publication "Where" magazine and in "First Thursdays" pamphlets.
