Heritage friends,

It is the season of love.

Our collective love for the Calgary Brewery – threatened for demolition – is the top of the list this February 2010. As Valentine’s Day approaches, we have an opportunity to celebrate what the site has been to Calgarians over decades of history and dream of what it could be in the not so distant future.

Do you have a love story linked to the brewery? Wedding photos shot in the gardens? Would you like to send the brewery a giant Valentine?

The Inglewood Community Association, for 51 years in a row, is hosting their Winter Carnival this Saturday February 13 from 1-4 pm at 1740 24th Avenue SE. The community centre with its domed roof even looks like an igloo! At the carnival you have the opportunity to sign the giant valentine to the brewery. Please visit the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society table at the event to see the card and add your signature.

Share your love story...

Project Brewery is a collective of the heritage groups in the city working together with the goal to preserve this famous brewery. One particular project being considered is a book publication on the brewery. One chapter relates to this season of love and the events happening around Valentines in the historic past and the brewery story unfolding now, in 2010.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and universally, hearts turn to romance. Just one day a year, yet something that enhances the world around us in ways we often underestimate. Think of the great historical icons of the world – the Eiffel Tower, Trevi Fountain – striking on their own, but with the image of lovers kissing in front of them, they become images of humanity.

In this vein, we are looking to further codify the role that our own Brewery gardens and the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company has played in the lives and loves of Calgarians over the century. It’s so true that personal experience can capture places and history in ways unvarnished facts can’t - and that’s why we need you. Help us more fully illustrate the spirit and history of this town center by sharing some of your stories with us. Did you have a wedding reception in the beautiful gardens? Maybe a first date picnicking there or even meet your future spouse over a Calgary beer? We would be so grateful if you would share your experiences to expand our collection of what the Brewery has meant to our city. We want to showcase this great resource of ours, and your experiences would be invaluable.

Not romantically linked to the Brewery but passionate about this historic site? Send us a note, or a love poem if you dare, telling us why you love the Calgary Brewery. Your words and pictures may be published for posterity.
