The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and the neighbourhood of East Victoria Park grew up side by side from the turn of the 20th century. By 1960 the Stampede needed room to grow and Victoria Park ultimately found itself caught in a “range war” that wasn’t resolved until 1998. The decades-long battle over Victoria Park involved urban renewal schemes, Stampede needs, LRT plans, pro hockey, the Winter Olympics, a failed Expo bid and boomtown pressures. It was a complex fight that often pitted residents and property owners against each other, similarly divided City Hall, and sometimes cast (or miscast) the Stampede in the role of villain. But it isn’t easy to tell who wears the black hat or the white hat in this fascinating story...
