Historic Calgary Week 2008

Schedule posted here: http://www.chinookcountry.org/hcw2008.html

See below for the tours offered by the Calgary Heritage Initiative on "CHI Day", Sunday July 27
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

From July 25th to August 3rd, 2008, join the Chinook Country Historical Society as they present their premier program, the 18th annual Historic Calgary Week.

With the theme this year, Explore & Celebrate Our Roots, we take a look back at the people who helped establish Calgary and the natural and agricultural base we grew from. Historic Calgary Week offers over 50 events during the ten-day celebration ranging from community walks and heritage building tours to personal accounts of early Calgary and a gigantic Calgary Herald crossword puzzle contest based on Calgary’s history. Events are open to everyone and are free of charge, with a few exceptions.

McHugh Bluff, Victoria Crossing, Crescent Heights, Cliff Bungalow, Bankview, and the Elbow River are but a few of the walking tours highlighting some of the early communities and natural resources of Calgary. Weekday lunch hours at Central United Church, located on the corner of 1st Street and 7th Avenue SW, will feature guest speakers from both in and around Calgary.

The week wraps up at Fort Calgary with a variety of closing day activities. Come and view a vintage movie at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers where Calgary’s roots first took hold.

You will find the program at www.chinookcountry.org.

“CHI Day” July 27, 2008 – Historic Calgary Week events hosted by the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society. If you would like to volunteer to help out on this day (light duty) email info@calgaryheritage.org

10 am. From Sandstone to Skyscrapers in Victoria Crossing

For decades the neighbourhood “on the other side of the tracks” suffered many of the classic symptoms of urban decay. Today it is experiencing rebuilding on a massive scale. See how the old and the new are being integrated to create a towering urban community with brick and sandstone roots. Join the Victoria Crossing BRZ and the Calgary Heritage Initiative on a walk through one of our oldest/newest areas. See what’s happening from Central Memorial Park revitalization to the incorporation of the Victoria Park schools in a high-rise condo project and more.

Meet: North side of the Memorial Park Library, 12 Ave and 2 St SW.

2 pm New life for the Dominion Bridge Historic Industrial Site

Since the 1920s steel from this Ramsay-area foundry supplied the oil patch, provided ships for the war effort and helped build landmarks like the Calgary Tower. The foundry closed in 1987 and later occupants built things like movie and stage sets, and the site also served as a movie location for films like Brokeback Mountain. Torode Commercial is redeveloping this sprawling historic site for commercial and residential while preserving its brick and steel buildings and eclectic history. Join heritage architect Lorne Simpson for a behind the scenes look at an adaptive re-use project in progress. (If you were on the tour last year, come again to see the changes and different parts of the site.)

Meet: Cafe Rosso on the east side of the Dominion Bridge site; 805 24th Ave SE (off Spiller Road)

7 pm The Most Famous People You Never Heard of Tour

Join us on an evening walk through Connaught and Lower Mount Royal and visit places associated with famous people you may never have heard of, or had no idea they had a Calgary connection: Who’s the other guy who founded the Stampede? He lived close to the guy who designed the flag. Just down the street from a revolutionary suffragette. Close to the joint where world-famous musical icon ate pizza. Just around the corner from the home of an important artist. Down the road from the last home of a musician who once inspired a popular TV show. You get the idea.

Meet: Laurier Lounge 1111 – 7th St SW
