Heritage Matters: Through an Artistic Lens, Calgary's Commercial Heritage

Friday October 25

Steve Speer shares his photographic vision of Calgary's skyline through his book, Building on the Bow: Landmarks in Calgary Commercial Real Estate. For this 2012 publication for BOMA, Steve travelled the familiar streets of Calgary finding and photographing the efforts of craftsmen and builders, entrepreneurs and visionaries; what he found during his journey to portray 100 years of commercial real estate changed how he looked at the city.

* Steve Speer is a respected local photographer whose ability to create exquisite fine-art images within commercial, industrial and challenging environments is well recognized. His work is displayed in the boardrooms and residences of art-collectors and corporations nationally and internationally.
Steve’s photography is project based. He prefers to work this way because of the strength of impact that comes from multiple images with a common visual thread. Says Steve, “I want my images to be able to stand on their own when viewed individually but there is so much more impact when a viewer is able to step back and see the visual thread; the story line that runs through the multiple images in a photographic portfolio. I want people to be able to spend time with my photographs and when they linger for a while they will continue to see new details in the images they are viewing”.

• Building on the Bow: Landmarks in Calgary Commercial Real Estate,

A fine-art photographic book and print exhibition was launched in mid-2012 by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Calgary.
This collection of 63 monochrome images is the first of its kind to capture the visual essence of Calgary’s evolution from the late 1800’s to the present day. The oldest building photographed is the Hudson’s Bay shed in Inglewood as it stands today and the newest is The Bow under construction and nearing completion when photographed.
