On Monday, November 7, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. in Council Chambers, Mayor Nenshi will present a commemorative scroll in recognition of the 1911-2011 Calgary Planning Commission Centennial, “A Century of Vision.” Accepting on behalf of the Commission will be David Watson as Chair of the Calgary Planning Commission.
Other Centennial activities and initiatives:
“A Century of Vision” exhibit (November 7 to 10, 2011, Municipal Building): An exhibit featuring before and after photos of Calgary’s development over the past hundred years, reproductions of the original “Mawson” concept plans for Calgary, and other artifacts.
“A Century of Vision” legacy: Currently in development for launch at the February 2012 Calgary City Teachers’ Convention, a series of six short videos and corresponding teacher resources that are intended to instil in students an appreciation for and understanding of The City planning process and the role citizens play in realizing the vision for our community.
“A Century of Vision” webpage, : Compare the Calgary of 1911 with the Calgary of today with a new interactive “before/after” photo application. The legacy videos/teacher resources will also be published to this page when they launch.
Calgary Planning Commission (CPC) is a committee appointed by City Council to make recommendations on planning matters and act as the approving authority on subdivisions and large or complex development applications. Notable past members of CPC include former Premiers (William Aberhart, Ralph Klein), a Lieutenant Governor (Grant MacEwan) and numerous Mayors, Ministers, MLAs and Aldermen – in all, a total of 260 Calgarians who volunteered their time and energy to make Calgary better.
