Every street corner in this city, and every town in this province, has a rich trail of story that impacts us all. To celebrate, analyze, and engage in the history that makes us who we are, the library invites you to join us for the second annual Heritage Weekend.
An exciting lineup of local historians, heritage planners, and educators will deliver a variety of presentations appealing to everyone, from the hard-core local history enthusiast to the curious newcomer. Enjoy films, browse displays, engage in lively discussion, and discover some of the many organizations working to preserve the richness of our past.
Some of this year’s features include a history of medicine in the West, the achievements of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during WWII, and the Rocky Mountain explorations of Mary T.S. Shaffer. Learn from the City’s heritage planner what the City’s historic resources evaluation system and inventory is, and what you can do. Friday night will feature a new installment of “Heritage Matters” – an ongoing lecture series made possible through a partnership with the Calgary Heritage Authority and the City of Calgary Land Use Planning and Policy. Matthew Siddons, recent graduate from the University of Calgary’s Urban Studies program, will explore the contributions of five different cultural groups to Calgary’s heritage in a presentation titled: “The Convergence of the World in the Last Frontier”.
We’ll finish off Saturday with a panel discussion addressing the challenges of preserving our past in a “social media world”. How are local organizations engaging Calgarians with their heritage in new ways? Let representatives from Calgary Heritage Initiative, Calgary Stampede, Chinook Country Historical Society, Lougheed House, Heritage Roundtable, City of Calgary, Corporate Records, Archives and more tell you themselves, followed by a chance to ask your own questions about Calgary’s future.
Hope to see you there!
