Jane's Walks May 7 and 8 (+ early bird walk May 5)

On May 7 and 8 there are a number of walking tours to celebrate the legacy of urbanist and urban activist Jane Jacobs. CHI is offering two tours:

May 7: From Sandstone to Skyscrapers

Victoria Park’s Sandstone landmarks provide the foundation for its recent revival as a vibrant inner-city community. Join us for a walk through 100 years of history and see how the old informs the new - or not. Meet at 1 pm on the front steps of Alberta’s first public library, Memorial Park Library (1221 2nd Street SW), to join the walking discussion about how Calgary’s sandstone heritage has influenced its newest skyscrapers. Coffee and conversation will be held after the walk at the library. Presented by the Calgary Heritage Initiative and Calgary Public Library.

May 8: The Beltline: New Ideas for Old Places

Jane Jacobs said that new ideas need old places. Walk a cross-section of the Beltline, from its revitalized warehouse district to people-friendly 17th Avenue, and enjoy the diverse mix of historic sites and high rises in between. Presented by the Calgary Heritage Initiative and Lougheed House. Start at 2 pm on May 8 at the Lougheed House, 707 13th Avenue SW.

With the persistent winter we're having its hard to believe that next weekend is the first weekend of May, and time for the annual Jane's Walks.

Jane's Walks were started in honour the legacy of Jane Jacobs, a 20th century urbanist and activist who promoted a grass roots approach to city planning.

Today going on a Jane's Walk gives you a chance to explore a city neighbourhood that you may have never visited before and to share ideas with new friends and neighbours.
