March 14 - Avi Friedman on retooling homes and communities

Greetings, this is an open invitation to a free event co-sponsored by the Federation, the Calgary Public Library, and the Alberta Professional Planners Institute. Feel free to pass it along.

Dr. AVI FRIEDMAN: RETOOLING HOMES AND COMMUNITIES FOR THE 21st CENTURY.

Professor Avi Friedman is a noted architect, writer and educator, with award-winning work in home design, community development and sustainability. The international design magazine Wallpaper included him in its list of 10 people "most likely to change the way we live," along with Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, and Sven Mattison, inventor of the Bluetooth computer chip. He is the author of the newly released book "A Place in Mind: The Search for Authenticity".

As cities and towns are facing new challenges, innovative thinking needs to be introduced into their planning. Sustainability has emerged, in recent decades, as a way forward to their design. The need to incorporate economic, societal, environmental and cultural aspects in all decision-making processes has become paramount. Avi will outline those new mindsets and design principles and illustrate them with examples of community design from across Alberta and Canada.

Monday, March 14 at 7 pm. Central Downtown Library, John Dutton Theatre - second floor. The library is on the LRT line. Nearby parking includes the Calgary Municipal Building Parkade (off 9th Ave. just east of 2nd St SE), Epcor Centre (off of 2nd St. SE at 9th Avenue) and the Telus Convention Centre (off of 1st Street SE, just south of 7th Avenue).
