From the Council minutes of Dec. 12, 2010:
2. PRESENTATION(S) AND RECOGNITION(S)
PRINCE OF WALES PRIZE - HONOURABLE MENTION
Mayor Nenshi recognized The City of Calgary’s ongoing commitment to heritage preservation. The Calgary Heritage Strategy was adopted with three main principles in mind – Identification, Protection and Management of Calgary’s historic resources.
The City, the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society, and other community-based groups are working together to preserve and celebrate heritage. Mayor Nenshi expressed thanks to Cynthia Klaassen, President of the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society for nominating The City of Calgary. He
also thanked the Calgary Heritage Authority for ongoing work to preserve and promote heritage throughout Calgary.
Henry Maisonneuve, Heritage Canada Foundation Board of Governors, Alberta was introduced by Mayor Nenshi, and presented an Honourable Mention for the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership to The City of Calgary. The Heritage Canada Foundation developed the National Awards Program in the 1970s. The goal is to celebrate
excellent conservation work being done by individuals, groups, and municipalities all across the country, while at the same time raising awareness of the value of heritage preservation.
The Prince of Wales lent his title to the creation in 1999 of a Heritage Canada Foundation prize to be awarded annually to the government of a municipality which has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to the conservation of its historic places. Mr. Maisonneuve extended congratulations to City Council, and the people of Calgary, for their
commitment to maintaining and integrating heritage buildings into official municipal plans, and for igniting and supporting the passion for its continued preservation.
MUNICIPAL HERITAGE PRESERVATION AWARD
Mayor Nenshi advised that The City has been recognized by Alberta Historical Resources Foundation. Mayor Nenshi invited Alderman Carra to present his remarks after accepting the Municipal Heritage Preservation Award on behalf of The City last week.
In presenting the award to Members of Council, Alderman Carra recognized and thanked heritage volunteers within our province, and the people of Calgary for their continued support in preserving and promoting Calgary’s rich heritage. The City of Calgary was nominated for
this award by the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society, a group that has been instrumental in making our heritage valued by, and accessible to, Calgarians of all walks of life.
