Hops and Heritage: The archaeology of Calgary Beer

On June 8, the anniversary of the provincial order that stayed the demolition of the original Calgary brewery, join archaeologist Brian Vivian and fellow beer aficionados for pint and a presentation on the how unearthed beer bottles and beer caps are important clues to the economic and social development of Western Canada. Hear about the cache of rare beer bottles recently found near the brewery, and other evidence of the influence of AE Cross's Calgary Brewing and Malting Co. We are meeting at a Club Paradiso, so there will be a cash bar. Come thirsty.

Bar opens 7 pm, presentation to follow
Club Paradiso (at the Village Cantina)
1413 9 Avenue Southeast

Check out the excellent column on page 2 of the June 8 Calgary Sun on Brian, his beer bottles, and the brewery. Posted at the link below... See above for info on the Tuesday June 8 event. ^

Bottles historical looking glass
By MICHAEL PLATT, CALGARY SUN

The old beer bottles may have been emptied by hockey fans celebrating Calgary's 1924 trip to the Stanley Cup, or perhaps they were drained before prohibition left Alberta dry in 1916...

It's valuable history... and Brian Vivian hopes the brown and green glass might save the Calgary Brewing and Malting Co. from being trashed itself.

Full story:

 Clarification to the story: It was actually Calgary Beer advocate Darren Havelock who recovered the historic bottles (beer, pop and others...) from the dump site and passed them on to Brian Vivian for posterity... Here is a link to Darren's "bring back Calgary beer website" - www.mycalgarybeer.ca

Here is the correcting letter published in the Calgary Sun, June 13, 2010:

NO FEELINGS BOTTLED UP

Re: “Bottles historical looking glass”, Michael Platt, June 8. To clarify, it was Calgary beer advocate Darren Havelock who recovered the historic beer bottles from the dump site near the brewery and passed them on to archaeologist Brian Vivian for posterity. On Tuesday, more than 80 people came out to celebrate the Calgary brewery. Cheers!

Bob van Wegen
VP, Calgary, Heritage Initiative

(Beer is a great cause to celebrate.)
