A couple of "unremarkable" buildings (1928 and 1958) on 10th Avenue and 7th Street SW in the Beltline are looking much improved now that their outer cladding has been removed to show the original brick. There was to be a major condo tower on this site, next to the old Warehouse nightclub, but that seems to be on hold.
It's nice to see Booker's going strong in the brick warehouse by the Langevin bridge (built about 1955 according to the City website). Older buildings make great character locations for restaurants and other businesses. From an article by John Gilchrist of the Herald, September 20. 2009:
They've kept the exposed, rough brick and the unpolished concrete floor, the high open ceilings and the crusty, industrial look... the bricks just keep getting older and older. And once the new tables and chairs get scuffed up a bit and the smell of barbecue mingles with the sound of live blues, Bookers could become the kind of roadhouse Calgary's been waiting for...
