New from Max Foran and the Athabasca University Press - available online as a free pdf and in bookstores.

A groundbreaking study of urban sprawl in Calgary after the Second World War. The interactions of land developers and the local government influenced how the pattern grew: developers met market demands and optimized profits by building houses as efficiently as possible, while the City had to consider wider planning constraints and infrastructure costs. Foran examines the complexity of their interactions from a historical perspective, why each party acted as it did, and where each can be criticized...

The spring edition of the free real estate magazine, "Calgary & Area New Communities", has a couple of articles on the history of Calgary suburban development, and its developers, by Doug Kelly - author of "$100,000 an Acre" - see above. The two articles focus mostly on E.V. Keith, his company Kelwood, and the history of SE communities such as Lake Bonavista. Who knew that Lake Bonavista began with unpermitted excavation of the lake, and that water was illegally diverted from Fish Creek to fill it? So recounts Kelly, with a "just good old boys" take on things. This makes me curious to read his book, but for a more critical and academic analysis read it alongside Max Foran's "Expansive Discourses", also noted above.
