City seeks input on antique planes

Aircraft - The city is hosting information sessions tonight and wednesday to get public input into what should be done with two antique aircraft that have been sitting in pieces for decades.

The fate of the two planes has been hotly debated over the past year, after the Aero Space Museum proposed its de Havilland Mosquito Mark 35 be sold in exchange for funds to restore its Hawker Hurricane and create an endowment fund for future restorations.

But a number of aviation enthusiasts fought the sale, arguing it amounted to giving away history.

Restoration of the city-owned planes is estimated to cost millions of dollars. Both planes are sitting in boxes. The museum believes the Hurricane has more heritage value than the mosquito.

The information sessions, which will outline options for the planes, are being held at the Aero Space Museum, 4629 McCall Way N.E., from 6 to 8 p. m. tonight and Wednesday. (January 6 and 7 2009)
