Fields of fame to honour crop of city giants

Calgarians could soon see large, resilient stalks of wheat popping up around the city.

Rising about five metres high and made of stainless steel and glass, the crops will commemorate giants of the city's past.

The fields of fame are to be located in parks, shopping centres, office buildings and major attractions, with each stalk containing a name, photograph and biographical information on a local pioneer.

"We want important individuals, some long forgotten, to be remembered and have a day in the sun," said Gordon Hoffman, one of the founders of the Alberta Champions Society.

"This is an educational opportunity. When children visit these sites, they'll be able learn something about the city's history."

Alberta Champions has come up with the first 24 names to be divided into four fields of fame.

They include familiar figures such as former premier William Aberhart, Calgary lawyer and past prime minister R. B. Bennett, Famous 5 member Nellie McClung and Calgary Stampede legend Guy Weadick.

"This is a long-term project, we want to add to it every year," said Hoffman.

The nominated historical figures came from the general public and were chosen in consultation with Alberta author Aritha van Herk and Calgary historian Harry Sanders....
