FCM Resolution Supports Ongoing Efforts by HCF to Stop Canada’s Landmarks from becoming Landfill

Ottawa, Ontario – October 29, 2008 - The Heritage Canada Foundation (HCF) applauds
the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) National Board of Directors for
adopting an important resolution calling for federal financial incentives in support
of the rehabilitation of heritage buildings.

In a recent letter informing Finance Minister Jim Flaherty of the board’s decision,
FCM president Jean Perrault reminded the Minister that the vast majority of Canadian
urban municipalities offer financial incentives for heritage buildings, and that
Canada remains the only G-8 country lacking a national system of funding policies
and programs to preserve its heritage properties.

The resolution, SOC08.3.07 – Federal Tax Incentives for Heritage
Places<http://www.heritagecanada.org/eng/services/advocacy.html>, calls on the
Government of Canada to establish financial tax measures for the rehabilitation of
heritage properties which would encourage private sector investment. The U.S.
Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program introduced some 25 years ago has
leveraged $36 billion in private sector spending from $7 billion in federal tax
credits. The results include the rehabilitation of more than 32,000 commercial
heritage properties, the creation of approximately 350,000 housing units and
thousands of new jobs.

In Canada, over the past 30 years more than 20 per cent of the country’s pre-1920
buildings have been lost to demolition.

La résolution de la FCM appuie les efforts de la FHC pour empêcher les monuments
patrimoniaux de devenir des sites d’enfouissement
Ottawa (Ontario) – Le 29 octobre 2008 – La fondation Héritage Canada (FHC) félicite
le Conseil national d’administration de la Fédération canadienne des municipalités
(FCM) d’avoir adopté une importante résolution qui réclame des incitatifs fiscaux
fédéraux pour la réhabilitation des immeubles patrimoniaux.
Dans une lettre récente informant le ministre des Finances Jim Flaherty de la
décision du Conseil, le président de la FCM Jean Perrault a rappelé au ministre que
la grande majorité des municipalités urbaines canadiennes offrent des mesures
incitatives financières pour les bâtiments du patrimoine et que le Canada est le
seul pays du G‑8 à ne pas avoir de système national de politiques et de programmes
de financement pour la préservation de ses bâtiments du patrimoine.
La résolution SOC08.3.07 – Incitatifs fiscaux financiers fédéraux pour les lieux
patrimoniaux<http://www.heritagecanada.org/fre/services/promo.html> invite le
gouvernement du Canada à créer des mesures fiscales financières pour la restauration
des bâtiments patrimoniaux, ce qui favoriserait l’investissement du secteur privé.
Le Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program lancé aux États-Unis il y a environ
25 ans a incité le secteur privé à dépenser 36 milliards de dollars en offrant des
crédits d’impôt fédéraux de 7 milliards de dollars. Les retombées comprennent plus
de 32 000 immeubles commerciaux réhabilités et la création de quelque 350 000 unités
d’habitation ainsi que des milliers de nouveaux emplois.
Au Canada, au cours des 30 dernières années plus de 20 % des bâtiments construits
avant 1920 ont été démolis.
