Crossroads CA gives Firestone Tower some love

To look at it now--rusted, faded, generally neglected--the Firestone tower hardly prompts curiosity, let alone the impulse to buy tires. The landmark, once part of a Firestone tire plant that employed some 400 people, has faded into the landscape...

But this stasis might end soon, if the Crossroads Community Association has its way. In last month's edition of its newsletter, Jerry Rourke (amateur historian, professional limousine driver) dedicated his A Look Back with Jerry Rourke column to the tower, and talked to two former workers who still live in the community. Previous editions of the Convenor have tried to gauge support for the idea of repainting the tower--either in its original Firestone glory or with a new mural. If the community association goes with the second option, its president, David Patman, would like to see a city-wide competition for the design because the tower "isn't just a local landmark but something a large percentage of Calgary sees every day..."
