Calgary - September 15, 2008 can be added to the rich history
of The City’s stunning sandstone City Hall building as it
recognizes the centennial of the “laying of the corner
stone.”

In 1908 the milestone event was celebrated with an afternoon
ceremony with many invited guests including Mayor Arthur
Cameron, R.B. Bennett, Colonel Walker – Calgary’s first Mayor
de facto, current aldermen, several former mayors and
aldermen, the City Clerk, clergymen from the various
religious denominations and a few prominent citizens.

The cornerstone is embedded outside City Hall on the
northwest side of the main entrance of City Hall and is made
of Aberdeen granite (a red granite plague). The cornerstone
is dated “City Council 1907” and lists Mayor Cameron, 11
aldermen, the City Clerk and the architect for City Hall
William Dodd.

A sealed copper box was also placed under the cornerstone and
contains a number of interesting reports, books and
artifacts. Among the list of deposits placed in the box were:
The New Testament, City of Calgary Bylaws and financial
reports as well as the medal of chairman of police department
and medal of city controller.

Construction was completed on City Hall in 1911 and the
official opening took place on June 26, 1911. The City looks
forward to acknowledging the 100th anniversary of this
special occasion in the year 2011.

In 1978, the sandstone City Hall was declared a historic
landmark.
