Herald launches exciting new chapter

Dear Herald Readers:

You may have noticed a small change to the front page of your newspaper this morning, the first edition of 2008.

Beginning today and for the next 12 months, the Calgary Herald nameplate at the top of Page 1 will colourfully proclaim the newspaper's 125th year of business in our city.

As you might imagine, all of us at the Herald are tremendously proud of reaching this milestone, something that would never have been possible without the loyal support of our readers and advertisers.

The Calgary Herald Mining and Ranche Advocate and General Advertiser began publishing as a weekly newspaper on Aug. 31, 1883, when Calgary's population was just 600 people.

Since then, the Calgary Herald has chronicled the evolution of our fast-growing city and played an integral role in the community by delivering news to Calgarians from home and around the world. It is a responsibility we have always taken seriously.

Today is the start of a new year and, for the Calgary Herald, the beginning of an exciting new chapter in its history as we move with great fervour to strengthen our multimedia capabilities.

This is an exhilarating time for the newspaper industry. Developments in Internet applications and digital communications are rapidly changing how people receive information about their neighbourhood, their city, their country, their world.

As we enter our 125th year, the Calgary Herald is responding to reader demand by making significant investments in our website, calgaryherald.com, which now provides continuous breaking news, photo galleries, video, exclusive journalism that complements our print edition, as well as a host of channels to find cars, jobs, houses, and more. We are also exploring new technologies that will help us meet your information needs more quickly and effectively.

In recent months, the Calgary Herald has also created a variety of online "micro-sites" devoted to such subjects as hockey, life and the environment.

Today, we are pleased to launch a new section on our website where we will capture the stories, photos and special series related to the newspaper's 125th anniversary. This unique content about our community will be posted throughout the year at calgaryherald.com/125. We hope you enjoy it!

As 2008 unfolds, we will unveil many other exciting initiatives. All of them are intended to fulfil our mission: to inform, enlighten and entertain our readers, and especially to provide you with news and information when, where and how you wish to receive it, with accuracy and integrity.

On behalf of all Calgary Herald staff, I would like to express our sincere thanks for making the Herald a part of your life. Your trust and patronage are deeply appreciated.

We wish you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous new year,

Malcolm Kirk
