Dear Friend of CHI,

Thank you for your support of the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society (CHI) in 2007. We would like to wish you the best during the holiday season and a happy New Year.

Some highlights from the past year include:

• Completing our first full year as a registered society, growing our paid-up membership to close to 50 people, plus about 200 in our broader email/website contact group.
• Maintaining Calgary’s premier website for historic preservation news, updated weekly, with 325 topics and almost 600 individual posts (try our search engine).
• Participating in Historic Calgary Week, including a full day sponsored by CHI with three historic walking tours, plus a tour of the Victoria Crossing area during the Mosaic event in the spring.
• Presenting programs at the downtown Calgary Public Library in the spring (in partnership with the City of Calgary’s Calgary Heritage Authority) and again in the fall
• Speaking out for heritage with many media appearances and commentaries on heritage topics for television, print, radio and web media.
• Commenting to City planning authorities and City Council on development applications, policy plans and other consultations that affect heritage.
• Participating in stakeholder consultations on the proposed Calgary Heritage Strategy and the future structure of the Calgary Heritage Authority.
• Outreach to the community via member participation in the Calgary Heritage Authority, Chinook Country Historical Society, Lougheed House Society and the Olympic Plaza Cultural District.
• Two members of the board attended the Heritage Canada conference along with a few other members of CHI.
• Playing an active role in the Community Heritage Roundtable, a regular discussion forum of community associations and heritage advocates.
• Employing a practicum student to help with heritage research, and helping to train others to do heritage research (including a session for the Cliff Bungalow-Mission community).
• Publicizing the “Stanley House” (Laurier Lounge, 1111 7th Street SW), which is the childhood home of George F.G. Stanley, the man who designed the modern Canadian flag. This included events on Flag Day and a celebration on George Stanley’s 100th birthday in July in cooperation with the Canadian Club of Calgary and the Historical Society of Alberta.

Moving forward in 2008, we will continue to inform Calgarians about heritage threats and opportunities and the other news, primarily through the website. We will also be doing more outreach to community associations and other groups. We want to build more capacity for doing historic research, with the goal of having more people identifying historic resources and researching them for the City inventory. There is an exciting new initiative that will help support heritage sites by promoting the businesses that sustain the buildings. As usual, we plan to be running various tours and events. Please keep an eye on the website for news and updates.

Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to be more involved. Have a happy holiday!

Regards, the Board of the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society
