Bridgeland garden to be preserved

History - A community garden in northeast Calgary will be designated a municipal historic site.

City council received a report Monday that suggested the Bridgeland/Riverside Community Garden at 46 7th St. N.E. be maintained as a historic resource. The garden is just below the old General Hospital site.

Council asked for the designation to go ahead.

The Calgary Heritage Authority says the garden was "almost certainly" cultivated under the Vacant Lots Garden Club, established by the city in 1911 to allow poor families to grow vegetables while ridding vacant lots of weeds and garbage.

Marshall Libicz stands in the garden plot he's worked on and off for more than 70 years, strawberries, zucchini, parsnip and beets at his feet.

"It's got a history," the 85-year-old says of the 825 square-metre lot where residents of Bridgeland/Riverside have grown food since the 1920s. "We thought we were going to lose it."

Wednesday, the city's land use, planning and transportation committee voted to designate the plot a municipal historic resource... full story at link...
