Province seeks input from Albertans to develop cultural policy
Feedback can be provided online or through printed questionnaire

Edmonton... A questionnaire is now available for all Albertans to give their input on a provincial policy that will support the growth and development of culture in Alberta.

"Our goal is to have a policy that reflects what we've heard from Albertans - that culture includes a broad range of activities and is an essential ingredient of a well-lived life," said Hector Goudreau, Minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture. "It will recognize ways that cultural activity contributes to our individual, social and economic well-being."

Preliminary consultation shows that Albertans see 'culture' as having a very broad definition that includes the arts, Alberta's historical and natural heritage, multiculturalism and diversity, and sport and recreation. Based on this definition, various components of a cultural policy have been drafted including the key outcomes, priorities, and strategies. The information gathered from responses to the questionnaire will assist the government in validating these components and in developing key actions to implement the policy, including potential areas for collaboration with communities.

"We'd also like to know what Albertans see as potential challenges to implementing a cultural policy, and what their suggestions are for overcoming these challenges," added Goudreau.

The draft policy and associated implementation plan will be brought forward for decision this fall.

The questionnaire is available online at www.culturalpolicy.alberta.ca , local MLA constituency offices or by mail. Call 310-4455 toll-free for more information or to request a printed questionnaire. The questionnaire will also be available through public libraries at the beginning of July. The questionnaire submission deadline is July 31.

Developing a cultural policy for the province is one of the key actions under Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to improve Albertans' quality of life. Other priorities for the government are to govern with integrity and transparency, build a stronger Alberta, manage growth pressures and provide safe and secure communities.
