Alpha House relocated in old Planetarium

After more than three weeks of shuffling from one emergency location to another, Alpha House and its residents are finally moving into a long-term home - in Calgary's old Science Centre.
Alpha House, which provides short and long-term shelter for the homeless and drug rehab programs, was forced out of its main building during the June flood. That site is currently uninhabitable and not expected to be repaired for another three to six months. Staff and 120 residents have moved to three temporary locations since then, most recently the Max Bell Arena, where residents camped out on the arena floor for the past two weeks.
Alpha House's outreach and housing coordinator Adam Melnyk told Fast Forward Weekly in an earlier interview that the moves were becoming stressful for everyone and staff were concerned about programs they couldn't offer without a long-term home.
The planetarium on the west-end of downtown Calgary has stood empty since the opening of the new Telus Spark Science Centre. Alpha House has signed a temporary lease with the City to use the building while flood damage at it's original site is remediated.
The City says this will not affect future plans for the old planetarium site.
