There's something about the feel of a north wind on his face that reminds Ken St. Louis of his youth. It brings back the memory of standing in the
living room of his childhood home, shivering from the draft coming from the north-facing window.
For three generations, St. Louis's family lived in the same catalogue home, a little house ordered through the mail and constructed in 1929 in the city's northeast.
"Nostalgia is really great until you have to live in it," says the 59-year-old Calgary lawyer. "Technology of the 1930s isn't the same as today. . . . I'm telling you that house was cold, drafty and had a cold heating system."
The Tuxedo home has survived the elements -- and the crunch of a fast-growing metropolis -- for nearly 80 years. It was one of many catalogue houses that once dotted the Prairie landscape...
