Parkdale Heritage Preservation Update
By Darcy Morgan, Chairman
Planning & Development - Heritage Preservation Subcommittee

The Parkdale Heritage Initiative, operating under the Planning
and Development Committee of the Community Association
continues to make progress on our mission to help the
community realize the value of its past. The committee of
community volunteers recently approved a proposal to the
upcoming Planning and Development Committee meeting late
in November. Details of the meeting outcome will follow in the
next newsletter, but we are very excited about the proposal. If
approved, it will provide the community with a comprehensive
record of our heritage buildings. The process for achieving this
must follow professional guidelines set out by the province and
that are recognized by most heritage authorities as delivering a
top notch result.

Creating a professionally authored record of our heritage assets
creates a foundation of knowledge for our community. We also
desire to make the heritage aspect of our community accessible
to community members. To this end, we have agreed to pursue
a “heritage walk” in 2007 that will facilitate learning and
understanding of our rich past. For this, and for other heritage
activities that we will eventually pursue, volunteer support is
critical. My fellow community members, as you plan your
activities and pursuits please consider donating some time to this
community-building cause. We can always use your help.
Other activities are on-going in conjunction with the Planning
and Development Committee and various City of Calgary
departments. These activities center around protection of
heritage properties within the community that are at some risk.
Although there is little legislative protection or governmental
financial support for heritage properties, we would like to
acknowledge the valued support our community has received
from Alderman Druh Farrell. Alderman Farrell has been a
consistent supporter of our community, in particular as it relates
to our heritage assets. Thank you Alderman Farrell!

The Parkdale Heritage Inventory is complete and several buildings have been added to the City heritage inventory as a result. Here is a link to the pdf. Congratulations everyone!
