Holiday message

Thank you for your support of the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society (CHI) in 2006.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you the best during the holiday season.

Some highlights from 2006 include:

• Achieving Society status and growing our paid-up membership from zero to more than 30, plus many more membership applicants (not yet paid) and about 200 in our broader contact group.
• Developing and maintaining the premier historic preservation website in Calgary, with frequent updates, over 450 articles and up to 20,000 hits monthly.
• Employing a summer student to help with building research.
• Successfully presenting four Calgary buildings for inclusion on the City’s Inventory of Potential Historic Sites – with more to come.
• Meeting with elected representatives on heritage issues, and providing heritage-focused comments on many development applications and City planning processes.
• Building a public presence with appearances, articles and mentions on media including Breakfast Television, CFCN news, Calgary Herald, Fast Forward, CBC radio and more…
• Playing an active role in the new Community Heritage Roundtable meetings, Historic Calgary Week, the Calgary Heritage Authority Lion Awards. We were also represented at the national conference of Heritage Canada.
• Conducting historic tours of 17th Avenue SW and Central Memorial Park.

CHI’s plans for 2007 include continued work on heritage policy like the City’s new heritage resource management plan and provincial and federal initiatives. We will continue to be vigilant with Development Watch, and alert the community to heritage threats, opportunities and other news. We plan to proactively research more buildings for placement on the Heritage Inventory, and help community associations and others to do this work as well. We are also making plans to communicate the value of heritage through the media, walking tours, special events, the website, and other initiatives that are in development. We will also have meetings for members and the general public, as well as an Annual General Meeting in 2007.

This is a great time to be involved in Calgary Heritage!

Regards,
Janet Woolgar, President,
On behalf of the CHI Executive
