New city planning work may have heritage implications

Postby newsposter » Mon Sep 18, 2006 9:59 am

There are several city planning exercises underway that may have implications for heritage.

Land Use Bylaw Review

The Land Use Bylaw (LUB) Review deals generally with new 'zoning rules' and practices for the city. With some exceptions, heritage is not specifically addressed in this plan, and will be addressed in other plans that 'overlay' the LUB - see below. But this may be an opportunity to influence 'process' issues that would make public or personal advocacy, for heritage issues for example, more effective. This could include better publicity of development applications, such as better on-site signage as they have in places like Edmonton and Vancouver, online posting of plans, circulation of plans to different groups, etc. Go to an open house, give it some thought, and stay tuned for more...

Heritage Resource Management Plan

This is a new plan being developed by city heritage planners. More will be posted as it becomes available. One aspect may be a reformed and more comprehensive heritage inventory for the City. The minutes of the June CHA meeting posted here have some thoughts on that:

Centre City Open Space Plan

"Calgary parks that are located within the Centre City are subject to several issues that create challenges and require solutions that extend beyond the standard approach to park management. In the process of compiling this plan several unique challenges of maintaining these parks were identified (including)... They contain historically significant elements, such as art, monuments and unique vegetation." See here for more - open house September 25:

Centre City Plan, et al

The 'umbrella' Centre City plan and its associated plans (e.g. open space, see above) may have some heritage implications. It is expected to help tie together new Downtown plans with the recently-passed Beltline Area Redevelopment Plan, and other plans and strategies.
