Advisory – September 13, 2006
City of Calgary Parks to Nominate Plains Cottonwood as a
Heritage Tree

Calgary – The City of Calgary Parks Urban Forestry division
is nominating a Plains Cottonwood tree in Crescent Heights
Park for recognition as one of Alberta’s Heritage trees. The
submission is in response to the Heritage Tree Foundation’s
“Great Tree Hunt” in Alberta...

...The tree, which is believed to have been planted around 1919,
is unique in form and size. “Plains Cottonwoods are probably
the largest trees in Calgary, and this specimen is the
biggest one that we know about,” said Russell Friesen, Urban
Forestry Coordinator with The City of Calgary Parks. “The
tree is nearly four meters in circumference and has a 27
meter spread making it the largest tree overall on City
land.”

Other trees nominated for heritage tree recognition in
Calgary include a 476 year old Douglas Fir in Douglas Fir
Preserve, remaining “Burns Trees” north of 22x on Macleod
Trail and the Memorial Drive trees planted to honor Calgary’s
First World War fallen.

So far, only 30 trees have been nominated for heritage
recognition in Calgary.

Trees on both public and private land qualify for nomination,
and anyone can nominate a tree for recognition. “The best
nominations made so far in Calgary were made by regular
folks, who just feel some special connection with a
particular tree,” said Friesen. Nominations may refer to an
individual tree or groups: a grove, avenue, garden, arboretum
or shelterbelt. Nomination criteria includes: historical or
cultural significance; age, height; rare or horticultural
significance; community landmark; a survivor of adverse
conditions; or provides habitat for rare or endangered
species. The nomination deadline is October 31 – just a few
weeks away. “The Heritage Tree Foundation is inviting
nominations from all of Alberta, not just Calgary,” says
Friesen, “If there is a tree that you think is special, or
has a story, now is the time to nominate it.”

Top tier trees - A look at some of Alberta’s historic specimens
Published in FFWD Weekly Dec. 11, 2008 by Adrienne Beattie in Books
