Postby Bob van Wegen » Fri Jun 09, 2006 8:18 pm

The email bulletin that was sent on May 31 looked odd on some email systems. Our apologies. Here is the May 31 bulletin for your information.

!! Westbourne Baptist Church threatened
The 1910 Westbourne Baptist Church may be demolished for Stampede

President Apartments news
The demolition application for the President Apartments was withdrawn. The building is not in the clear, but the Heritage Planner has been working
with the owner on options to save the Beltline landmark and news is
expected soon. Thanks to those of you who have already written letters of
support to Alderman Madeleine King. Keep an eye on the website for the
latest news.

Hart House proposal controversial
A proposal to build a set of townhouses around the historic Crandell-Hart
House in Patterson Heights is going to City Council on June 19. The latest
plan is posted on Ald. Burrows’ website:
http://www.craigburrows.ca/15_files/page0011.htm. Some neighbours oppose aspects of the development plan or propose that the house should become a public facility. The owner/developer says that the condos are necessary to fund the retention and repair of the house and City planners agree. The proposal going to Council is supported by the Calgary Heritage Authority because it saves the house, which will be designated a municipal heritage site. CHI agrees that this is a fair deal for heritage. If you have anything to say, the area alderman is Craig Burrows,
craig.burrows@calgary.ca, or you can contact your own Alderman. As always, a cc. to info@calgaryheritage.ca is appreciated. More information about the project is here:
http://www.calgaryheritage.org/CHIForum/vi ... .php?t=118.

Inner City Area Redevelopment Plans
The Beltline ARP was passed at City Council on May 15. CHI was there to
generally support the plan, which creates a density transfer system that
enables municipally designated heritage buildings to transfer their unused
development potential to other sites. This will hopefully result in more
buildings being protected. The Mission ARP is going to the Calgary Planning Commission is expected to go to Council in July. It also has a number of aspects dealing with heritage. For more on the Beltline and Mission ARPs, check out the News section of www.calgaryheritage.org.

Greyhound garage, we hardly knew Ye!
We lament the loss of the moderne Greyhound bus garage and offices in the Eau Claire district. The building had been noted in the Calgary Civic
Trust’s modern building survey, but it had not yet been added to the city’s
heritage inventory. It is unfortunate that the streamlined façade could not
have been saved in the new development. Go here for photos:

Waiting for Encana
Designs for the much anticipated Encana building, by lead architect Sir
Norman Foster, are expected to be unveiled in the middle of June. Of great interest will be how the project will treat the five heritage buildings on the fringe of the two-block site. A CHI member was recently was interviewed on CBC’s Calgary Eyeopener about the project. Stay tuned, and look for news at www.calgaryheritage.org under ‘Development Watch’.

Website Updates
The front page of our website now shows the ten most recently updated news, event and development watch items. Soon we will be adding more featured heritage buildings. Check back often at the website is updated very frequently – much more frequently than these emails!.
