Bankview beauty: This is truly a house with history

It's hard to imagine a home with more curbside charm. The stone path with rock border, the wonderful brick-piered front veranda, the glimpse of the second floor sleeping porch from the sidewalk, and the original medallion window at the peak of the gable -- all of this home's original curb appeal remains intact.

As spring arrives and the front garden and the old-growth trees out front come back to life, this inviting vintage home will become a real traffic-stopper.

Inside, every nook and cranny has been lovingly restored.

Even the original interior millwork and fine, old, solid wood doors have been hand-sanded to reveal the rich fir grain. And the proud old mahogany fireplace has also been lovingly refurbished without obliterating its personality and almost a century of experience.

Where necessary, what had been removed by previous owners has been replaced -- sometimes using recycled materials that were original to the home. Where new was a must, replacements blend harmoniously with the distinct 1912 atmosphere.

The sheltering front veranda leads directly into a surprisingly spacious living room that occupies the front half of the main floor. Here, the main features are the fireplace and a bay window. Handsome double pocket doors open into a formal dining room which, in turn, leads into the kitchen.

The kitchen is well-organized and appropriately modernized with stainless steel appliances -- including the six-burner gas cooktop every cook dreams of -- and warm, beautiful cherry cabinets with vintage-style pulls.

Off the kitchen, a traditional back porch leads onto decking that continues along the side of the home, a low-maintenance garden and a two-car garage with a workbench.

The second storey has also kept its original personality. The master bedroom is situated at the front, and features direct access to the open-air sleeping porch, which becomes remarkably private space when the trees are in full leaf. If you install a screen, this will still be a wonderful space to sleep comfortably on warm summer nights.

Originally, the master bedroom had been two small, separate bedrooms with a hall between that led to the sleeping porch. Long ago, these spaces were combined -- an improvement that worked well, but unfortunately left the original maple floors beyond repair. Now new maple flooring has been installed. There are two bedrooms on this second level, both sharing a bath with a particularly practical layout.

Climb up one more storey to the third level of the home, and you'll find a lounge area that dates back to some 1970s renovations, including a wide expanse of glass that has a view of downtown Calgary.

There's also another full bath, a tucked-away guest room, and another dear little bedroom chamber under the eaves. This little room has a wonderful secret -- a wee door opens into what the owner affectionately calls the Hobbit Room. It's a low, slope-ceilinged space that any child would adore -- a tiny playroom with shelves, room for a comfy chair, and a bird's-eye-view of passersby on the front sidewalk from the oval window.

The current owner of the home researched the provenance of this lovely old home and discovered at least two former residents of note.

Oilman Sam C. Nickle (1913-1994) lived in this home at some point in his life -- likely early on, says the owner. The Nickle Arts Museum at the University of Calgary is named for Nickle.

There's also Laura Goodman Salverson (1890-1970), author of 10 books including a novel, The Dark Weaver (1937) and her autobiography Confessions of an Immigrant's Daughter (1939) -- both winners of the Governor General's Award.
