Courtesy Donna Zwicker of the Heritage Roundtable and Chinook Country Historical Society:

There is a new City of Calgary Parks Dept. project referred to as the Bend in the Bow. The project includes the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and the Pearce Estate Park. The first phase of the two part renewal process includes Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and the adjacent Inglewood Wildlands area. The second phase is the Pearce Estates.

The City of Calgary has a Cultural Landscape Strategic Plan, a plan to manage the collection of Calgary cultural landscapes. The plan makes reference to the fact that the Pearce Estates no longer has any remnants of the house but that the 'landscape still retains Pearce's name and this site should be commemorated for the role he played in the development of Calgary'. The Pearce and Walker sites are the remaining agricultural homestead sites in Calgary's inner city.

Within the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary site, the Colonel Walker house is a designated heritage resource on a separate.98 hectare title. Both the house and its carriage house are designated. The agricultural homestead site once included greenhouse and a sawmill.

The City of Calgary has an online survey to gather input from the public on a Design Development Plan for phase one - Inglewood and Wildlands with the ultimate goal of creating a new regional park for Calgarians.
Please visit the online site survey at http://www.calgary.ca/bendinthebow before June 30th.
