There are three books coming out for the Calgary history enthusiast on your Christmas list. Two of the authors, Stephanie White and Max Foran are speaking at the Calgary Public Library's heritage weekend: http://calgarypubliclibrary.com/service ... ekend&pg=1

Calgary's abandoned building projects
As the Calgary Stampede celebrates its 100th anniversary, a new book says the Stampede would look quite different today, if early city planners had gotten their way. Stephanie White is the author of "UnBuilt Calgary: A History of the City that Might Have Been." It's about 30 building projects abandoned over the past century in Calgary...

In a similar vein but digging deeply into a pivotal 1960s battle, urban historian Max Foran looks at the unrealized plan to relocate the CPR tracks to the banks of the Bow in Development Derailed: Calgary and the CPR , 1962–64 http://www.aupress.ca/index.php/books/120222. Not out until the new year so a belated Christmas gift...

Reel Time: Movie Exhibitors and Movie Audiences in Prairie Canada, 1896 to 1986 by Robert M. Seiler and Tamara P. Seiler will surely include Calgary's movie houses and impressarios like Sherman and Barron. Out in November. http://www.aupress.ca/index.php/books/120213

An update on the above... Stephanie White's Unbuilt Calgary has been on the shelves since before Christmas. There are lots of stories about the book online if you google it. Here is a January 24, 2013, article about it in FFWD Weekly: http://www.ffwdweekly.com/article/arts/ ... not-10308/

The Seiler's book Reel Time: Movie Exhibitors and Movie Audiences in Prairie Canada, 1896 to 1986, is newly available in paperback and via download at http://www.aupress.ca/index.php/books/120213 There is information about historic Calgary cinemas in the book, including the recently closed Uptown Theatre and the role of the Barrons (of the Barron Building and other ventures).

Max Foran's book, Development Derailed: Calgary and the CPR , 1962–64, should be out by the spring. Max gave a fantastic talk on the subject for the Chinook Country Historical Society on January 29 and if the book is half as fun it will be a must-read.
