Elbow river to Calgary water supply siphon

Postby neilw » Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:11 pm

I was reading about The City of Calgary building a water siphon from elbow river and near present highway 22 ,to bring water to Calgary .While working on a constuction earth moving crew an old wooden pipeline was uncovered in the Discovery point area .Reading up on this and searching around I discovered part of the concrete head works on the north side of the elbow river ,just east of the highway 22 bridge that crosses the elbow .This is the bridge between the highway 8 junction and the Trans Canada highway. I was poking around the the north side of the river ,about 400 feet from the actual water when I discovered some concrete footings and some pipe. This would be where the siphon started and went all the way to Calgary ,sometimes under ground sometimes not .. Anyway I thought I'd mention it because it is a little known bit of our history.
